Sports

Following a successful launch of outdoor educational programs, TRP made the decision to expand into team sports.

In February 2012, the program Waveland Academy was formed. Named after the historic Waveland Avenue that runs alongside Wrigley Field, home to Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs, Waveland Academy in Gulu is a place where kids can gather to dream about their future and celebrate the beautiful combination of sports and youth. With direction and support from TRP, Waveland Academy is currently operated and managed by Ugandans. This model is our attempt to create programs that will live in the community for years to come.

Goal

The mission of sports programming at Waveland Academy is to use the positive lessons from team sports to help motivate youth to ‘conceive action’ as they dream of their future. Our vision is to transform the youth of northern Uganda by offering sport programs which create a sense of empowerment, direction, and hope while holistically developing the individual athletes.

Why Sports?

Our core belief is that sports naturally develop lessons required for a successful life. The program is designed to develop the physical, emotional, and spiritual skills needed to excel in life–and our goal is to reach as many youth as possible with these lessons. By giving nearby schools the opportunity to train their students in a specific sport, participants are given healthy avenues for competition and trained by our highly skilled mentors.

What does Waveland Academy do?
Currently, Waveland has introduced baseball into five schools throughout Gulu, Uganda. Sports programs are consistently run at Bishop Negri Primary School, where over 500 beneficiaries enjoy instruction during physical education classes and after school. The program also operates baseball leagues that run each semester.

Additionally, Waveland Academy invests in individual players and groups by sponsoring them at national camps and tournaments. This gives athletes a rare opportunity to sharpen their skills and further develop their personal character.
